Robert Skyer FellowshipFunded by Susannah Skyer Gupta in honor of her late father, Robert Skyer (BS 1958), the Skyer Fellowship provides financial support to an ID student with a preference for underrepresented students in the design community. After being notified of admission to the Institute of Design and you have paid your enrollment deposit fee, you will receive access to the ISSS Portal where you will submit your financial support documents. We also consider full-time internships, volunteer work, and paid freelance projects as formal work experience. Admission Requirements
Our Foundation sequence provides prerequisite skills and experience for students without formal design training. For international students with limited English fluency, we offer English + Design courses. Students will go through all stages of the innovation process and practice using several structured methods. By applying these methods to a project, students will learn about the benefits and limitations of each method.
Educational models are shifting.
All students must meet with their academic advisers at least once a semester during their program of study. Each meeting should be scheduled prior to course registration for the following semester. IIT Institute of Design’s Master of Design program is for experienced professionals, both designers and non-designers, who need twenty-first century innovation skills to take their careers to the next level. Our programs welcome and support students without formal design education and those working on their English fluency.
This learning will help them decide which method to use as they encounter various innovation challenges. They will also learn about the kind of information needed as inputs for using these methods and the nature of outputs generated. The English + Design program allows talented international designers to pursue a graduate degree at ID. This unique program of study combines English for Special Purpose (ESP) instruction with graduate level design education. English courses are taken concurrently with MDes courses during the first two semesters.

This course will introduce students to the whens and hows of creating and using stimulus effectively in their practice of design research. This class will introduce students to theory and methods of behavioral observation, description, and analysis. The Ph.D. program is for researchers who seek to contribute to theories and methods core to the field of design. These courses are corequisite for students who require additional fluency in English and design-specific vocabulary. If the required advising meeting is not completed in a particular semester, an academic hold will be placed on the student's record preventing any course registration for the following semester. The hold cannot be removed until the student has completed the advising meeting.

Explores the techniques of planning and designing communications systems in print, web, and three-dimensional exhibition form from concept generation to visualization. Relevant perceptual, cognitive, and systems principles are investigated and prototyped. Examines the principles and methods of prototyping and visual representations for all stages of the design process. This course will orient students on how the Institute of Design approaches coursework, team dynamics, critique, professionalism, and supplementary skills to enable students to excel during their time in the school. Candidates should have a master’s degree in design (or equivalent) and/or significant experience as a professional designer.
